AACOG is proud to support veterans and their families with programs that promote health, independence, and quality of life. Through these programs, AACOG ensures that veterans can stay healthy, connected, and independent in the communities they call home.

Health and Wellness

Explore opportunities for education and services related to nutrition, physical education and more that are available to individuals with IDD as they age in place.

Transportation

Through our partnership with Alamo Regional Transit (ART), veterans can access affordable and reliable transportation to medical appointments, work, school, and essential errands. This service ensures mobility and independence for veterans who may not have other transportation options.

Home Support and Energy Solutions

Our home and housing programs help veterans maintain safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient homes. Services include home weatherization and energy conservation improvements, as well as minor repairs and modifications, enabling veterans to age in place with dignity and security.

Caregiver Support

Caregiver support programs offer assistance to caregivers of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Whether a young parent caring for a young child with IDD or an older parent caring for an aging adult child, there are various resources and programs available for support.

Alamo Veterans Network

The Alamo Veterans Network assists service members, veterans, and their families in the Alamo Region to include the following counties: Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, McMullen, and Wilson counties.

The program creates a coordinated network of public, private, and nonprofit organizations serving active duty service members, veterans, and their families.

Alamo Veterans Network covers a comprehensive range of services, evaluates your personal goals, and directs you to the network providers who can help you reach them. You only have to provide eligibility information once (Proof of Service and State ID), and the Alamo Veterans Network providers work together to serve you.

Veteran Directed Care (VDC)

The Veteran Directed Care program gives veterans of all ages the opportunity to receive home and community based services.

This program is for veterans who need personal care services and help with activities of daily living. Examples include help with bathing, dressing, or fixing meals.

As a part of this program, veterans or their representatives receive help developing a spending plan and hiring workers (which might include their own family member or neighbor) to help live independently.

Services are based on assessed needs. Contact the Veterans Administration to determine eligibility.

Homes for Texas Heroes


This program is funded through a grant from the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans’ Assistance, which supports organizations that serve veterans and their families. For more information, visit www.TVC.Texas.gov.

The Housing for Texas Heroes (H4TXH) Program provides home modifications, repairs, and weatherization for veterans and surviving spouses.

Eligible beneficiaries: Low income Veterans, Surviving Spouses

Requirements include:

  1. Client must be low income (80% and below the median family income for the county in which the beneficiary lives as defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)).
  2. Disability determinations are made by the Veterans Administration.
  3. Must be listed on file with the county appraisal district as the current owner(s) of the property. 
  4. Must be current on existing mortgage loans or home equity loans. 
  5. Must be current on property taxes. 
  6. Property receiving services must be the client’s primary residence.

FAQs

Who is Eligible for IDD Services?

Any resident (child or adult) of Bexar County, who is believed to have one or more of the following disabilities, may be eligible for services: Intellectual Disability, Developmental Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or a Related Condition. Persons with related conditions who are eligible for services in Medicaid programs operated by the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). Nursing facility residents who are eligible for specialized services due to intellectual and developmental disabilities or a related condition. Children who are eligible for services from the Early Childhood Intervention Interagency Council (ECI).

When will I be able to access services?

All Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Services (IDDS) programs currently have an interest list. For more information, contact the Intake and Eligibility Department at (210) 832-5020.

Who is my service coordinator?

Refer to your service coordination introduction letter or call (210) 832-5020 to be referred to your service coordinator.

What is an EDA?

An EDA is an eligibility determination assessment, formerly known as a DMR. The assessment will determine what services you may be eligible for, and is now referred to as Determination of Intellectual Disability (DID). To find out more, call the Intellectual and Development Disabilities Services office at (210) 832-5020.

At what age can my child be tested for developmental delays?

There is no minimum or maximum age requirement to have a DID completed. However, to receive services, there must be evidence that an intellectual disability originated prior to age 18 or that a developmental disability or related condition originated prior to age 22.

I am in a Medicaid-waiver program and I want to transfer to another county, whom should I contact?

Contact your assigned Services Coordination Specialist, and he or she can assist you with contact information for that county and to facilitate the transfer process.

How do you request services through the IDDS?

The process begins with the Intake and Eligibility Department by the completion and submission of an Intake and Eligibility (I&E) application. You may download an I&E application from our website, request an application be mailed to you, or call an intake worker at (210) 832-5020Intake and Eligibility Application

I received a letter from the Social Security office. Can someone help me with making sure I respond appropriately to the request?

The IDD Services program has a Financial Eligibility Specialist to assist you with maintaining or reestablishing your benefits. 

Can an individual receive emergency services from the IDD Services, such as respite services, if noted to have developmental disabilities but not yet tested or determined to be eligible for service?

Yes, the IDD works with Child Protective Services, Adult Protective Services, hospital establishments, the general public, etc. that have cases that meet the safety net requirements for emergency services for placement or respite.

How can I become a local general revenue funded services/safety net services provider?

Review the Open Enrollment Application for a description of the requirements and submittal process. If you have questions, contact the IDDS Client Rights Officer at (210) 832-5020.
